The recession is over huh? Riiiiiiiiiiightt…

Will be interesting to check the US debt clock over time in relation to the screen grab from today. I stuck it below the fold because it was kind of ugly.

Bernays invented the public relations profession in the 1920s and was the first person to use Freud’s ideas to manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations how they could make people want things they didn’t need by systematically linking mass-produced goods to their unconscious desires.

Bernays was one of the main architects of the modern techniques of mass-consumer persuasion, his most notorious coup was breaking the taboo on women smoking by persuading them that cigarettes were a symbol of independence and freedom. But Bernays was convinced that this was more than just a way of selling consumer goods. It was a new political idea of how to control the masses. By satisfying the inner irrational desires that his uncle Freud had identified, people could be made happy and thus docile.

Where once the political process was about engaging people’s rational, conscious minds, as well as facilitating their needs as a society, the documentary shows how by employing the tactics of psychoanalysis, politicians appeal to irrational, primitive impulses that have little apparent bearing on issues outside of the narrow self-interest of a consumer population. Curtis cites a Wall Street banker as saying “We must shift America from a needs- to a desires-culture. People must be trained to desire, to want new things, even before the old have been entirely consumed. [...] Man’s desires must overshadow his needs.”

Check out some of the cheerleading headlines on the corporate owned websites after the jobs data today showing unemployment as having dropped from 9.5% to 9.4%:

“Economy sheds fewer jobs than expected”, “Stocks Jump After Strong Jobs Data”, “Jobless rate improves”.

Now, if you just look a little deeper you see:
Unemployment fell by 267,000 to 14.5 million, because the labor force declined by 422,000, which means the jobless rate fell because people dropped out of the work force, not because they got jobs.

An alternative measurement of unemployment (U6) that includes discouraged workers and workers forced to work just part-time is at 16.8%.  The official reported (U3) unemployment number doesn’t include people who have stopped looking for work, or those who’s unemployment benefits have expired. Nearly 5 million people — more than a third of the unemployed in America — have been out of work for longer than six months.

The average person is going to just read or watch the headline news and swallow the propaganda hook line and sinker.

I ordered these sweatpants from Ucon and got them in the post yesterday. Strange to get excited about some pants perhaps but the attention to detail on them is really something. From the cut and the different materials to the silicon prints on the fabric and the taped zippers, they really go the extra mile with comfort and detailing. Mad comfy.

Saw this bike on the way, pretty badass despite or maybe because of some parts looking homemade.

Although it is only 30Mins from Salzburg we never made it to Wolfgansee before, but as it turns out I think it is pretty much the nicest spot around here in the summer. Parts of the lake have quite a lot of people, but we found a whole section with cliffs, wooden paths and almost nobody there. Lots of stuff to jump off and realize you are completely out of practice at doing blackflips and frontflips. Ended up misjudging how high it was and kind of doing both at once the first couple of times and wiping out.  Feeling fairly stiff today.
