Leogang lightning and crashing sucks

I didn’t crash mountain biking for as long as I have lived here in Salzburg, and today, in two runs, I crashed twice!

I hate crashing. It puts the fear of the gods into you and it bloody hurts. I guess I came off ok considering. Just got a really sore leg/ankle/foot and torn up forearms. The first time I came up short on a big double, and both my feet flew off the pedals. I flew over the next double which was directly after it, with no feet on the pedals, careened off the side of the track, dropped about 2 meters to another path below, and if that wasn’t bad enough, I then got brought to a standstill finally by an electric cattle fence which i got stuck under and which proceeded to to give me mad electric shocks! Ouch!

haha. Shit.

Got to get straight back on the horse and all that, but on the next run I lost grip in both tires simultaneously and hit the ground again tearing up my thigh and the other forearm! Bloody hell! Was more my pride dented that time though, and shortly after a massive lightening/thunder/hail storm rolled in and they stopped the lift. Was just in time I guess, as when the adrenaline wore off I could hardly put any weight on my left leg. Still, nothing broken and it was a pretty fun day anyway riding with some good friends!

Wagrain Bike park full runs

So we filmed 5 runs on the weekend at Wagrain, 2 with the helmet camera pointing forward and 2 pointing back, and I did a few other shots with the 550d. We filmed top to bottom without stopping so the vid is quite long (and boring if you are not into biking I guess). Its also a little small on this page and looks obviously much better fullscreen and in HD on the vimeo site here. I think we didnt have the helmet angle quite right, but its tricky since there is no playback screen on the GoPro. Benny is in black with purple bars, me in white tee and helmet.

We shot some footage yesterday from Wagrain Bike park with the GoPro and also with the 550D which I wanted to test on action footage. I will try to put together an edit but here are some still frames for now.

All photos shot with Canon 550D with a 35mm fixed prime lens. It didnt really stop raining all day and the light was terrible in the woods so it was tricky to get the camera settings right, but I was pretty happy with some of the shots.

The whole side of the mountain was a mudbath.

Rachel Atherton was favorite to win but crashed out.

We went and checked out the UCI worldcup downhill in Leogang today. Was pretty epic. Finally starting to get to grips with the 550D on full Manual mode. Got quite a lot of photos which I will try to get up soon. Here are some of Santa Cruz Alps rider Greg Minaar who won in a pretty exciting race.

We walked all the way up to the start of the track and then pretty much ran all the way back down as the riders came down one by one. Craig was missing his bike but did a pretty decent wallride anyway.

First time out on the Meta 6 at a proper bike park.

Both my friend Benny and I picked up last years Commencal Meta 6 frame after finding a deal with 60% off and after having spent the last year listening to our friend Craig raving about it. Both bikes were built totally differently, and whilst i cant speak for his, man am I impressed with mine!

First ride Gaisberg 2010

Got dropped off at the top of the mountain (thanks Jule!) above Salzburg after driving for 5 hours back from lake Garda this evening. I have spent the last 2 weeks slowly building up a new bike together with my friend Craig (thanks for the help dude!) and was so excited to see the sun shining again after several weeks of solid rain. Rode around at the top for a bit getting a feel for the bike, and then bombed down the back all the way back home. Man that Commencal is wicked! Never ridden such a good bike before and after some small suspension tweaks it rode like a dream. No photos on the ride down, but Jule got some of me making sure everything was screwed on properly at the top. So nice up there, so thought I would share the photos.

Lunchtime ride

Since (finally) fully quitting smoking a month ago, I have been trying to get myself in better shape by heading into the hills behind work for a ride at lunch. We do the same ride every time, about 35-40mins steep uphill, and then 5 – 10 mins back down depending on how fast we go on tight, steep, rocky single track. It’s a nice ride and I took the 550d out today to see how it is for action shots. The trail is pretty tame for jumps, so the shots are not that exciting, but the quality of them is excellent. Looking forward to hitting leogang or some other big parks/mountains around here. Also made a small gopro bike test, which is not really post-able as the run is nothing special, but it has a lot of potential.
