Airport full body scans

Airport full body scans

Talk about invasion of privacy! These pictures are even a little blurry, some others I have seen are literally like photos of you naked. Now to be used on all flights from Amsterdam to America. There is apparently only a low radiation risk and you are UNLIKELY (!!!) to get cancer. So I guess that’s ok then.

Er, wait, no it’s bloody not! Parallels with much of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four come to mind.

Nineteen Eighty-Four (also 1984), by George Orwell, published in 1949, is a dystopian novel about the totalitarian regime of the Party, an oligarchical collectivist society where life in the Oceanian province of Airstrip One is a world of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance, public mind control, and the voiding of citizens’ rights.

From the same novel, this also sounds familiar:

In the telescreens, figures for all types of production are grossly exaggerated (or simply invented) to indicate an ever-growing economy where there is actually loss.

Former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff, who has taken to the airwaves virtually nonstop since Christmas day. Pushing for full body scanners as a cure-all for lax airport security, he revealed only belatedly that he also represents the only company to have initially qualified for the government contract to manufacture the full-body scanners. Before this came out, how would we have known if we were being directed to a certain viewpoint? The public had no way to sort this out because the public didn’t know there was something to sort out. And even after the revelation, the public will likely remember Chertoff’s warnings more than any caveat.

I had a full body scan at San Fran airport when we left after xmas…very weird experience. You get no warnings, just herded through a device like something from Doctor Who, then corralled into another area while they wait for a guy/girl watching in another room (to avoid embarrassment) to radio through that they have finished looking at you naked and you may proceed to leave the country…
We are way further down the road to all powerful governments than 1984 portrays, its just that most people havent noticed….
